BCAAs

Branched Chain Amino Acids also popularly known by their initials BCAA's (L-Leucine, L-Valine and L-Isoleucine) are essential amino acids that form part of the nutrition for athletes and individuals looking to increase their muscle mass as they benefit physical and energy rehabilitation.

BCAA's play a very considerable role in sport, they play a part in increasing nitrogen in the muscle, optimising alanine and glutamine production, participating in reducing lactate production and increasing energy while decreasing protein degradation (or breakdown), as well as increasing both muscle work fitness, rehabilitation and ultimately muscle volume. BCAA's also assist in enhancing mental performance by moderating the progression of central nervous system fatigue throughout training.

Before training - They help to protect muscle mass and in endurance sports, they also benefit energy intake, helping to avoid muscle glycogen depletion and thus delaying fatigue.

Glutamine

Glutamine (Kyowa®) is the most abundant amino acid in our body and blood, it is the "vehicle" for the transport of nitrogen to our muscles and tissues. It is an essential amino acid for securing and rebuilding muscle tissue and contributes to the rehabilitation of both muscle and glycogen. It is also involved in increasing and optimising the functionality of the immune system and decreases "overtraining syndrome" (OTS). Glutamine also transports toxic ammonium to the kidneys for subsequent excretion, which helps to maintain the acid-base balance.

In the course of a period of physical or physiological stress, such as an extended period without food, physical trauma, surgery, strenuous physical work, or training for an intense sport or weight lifting, the intestinal tract utilises enormous proportions of l-glutamine. This causes a drop in blood glutamine levels, and skeletal muscles (involved in driving the locomotor system) are destroyed to provide the necessary demand for glutamine.

Finally the formula has been enriched with Vitamin B6 which is essential in the metabolisation of amino acids and proteins.

If I already take protein, will consuming BCAAs or Glutamine in their free form be of any benefit to me?

The metabolic effects of consuming amino acids in their free form are not the same as those achieved by consuming the same amino acids when they are in a whole protein (with peptide linkage). The immediate passage of these amino acids through the system exerts a much stronger activation of their intended sources. Among other things, if you consume 5 grams of arginine in its free form before exercise, you will feel a greater pump than if you had not taken it. However, if you wanted to consume 5 grams of arginine in the guise of whole protein, you would have to consume a ton of protein to get that ratio of arginine and the rate of transport would be much, much slower, plus you wouldn't be filling your body all at once. The same goes for BCAAs (branched chain amino acids) and glutamine: consuming 10 grams of BCAAs and Glutamine provides a greater activation than taking 10 grams of BCAAs and Glutamine from whole protein. Amino acids in free form are absorbed more efficiently than whey protein.

Directions for use:

Take one serving of 12.5 grams (one level scoop) half an hour before training, and another serving just after the end of training.

The post-workout intake should be taken with a carbohydrate-rich drink.

On rest days, it is suggested to take a 12.5 gram serving during the night before resting on an empty stomach.

In the definition stage, increase the intake to three doses a day, to avoid muscle loss.
