Fructose is a simple carbohydrate; a monosaccharide structurally very similar to glucose, with the characteristic that it has a glycaemic index 10 times lower, and therefore insulin stimulation is minimal.


Description

What is fructose?

Fructose is the main sugar found naturally in various fruits, and in honey. Its main function is to replenish and replenish liver glycogen.

The consumption of fructose together with other carbohydrates improves the rate of glucose oxidation and by providing energy with a lower glycaemic index it helps to supply energy in a more gradual way. In addition, it has a higher sweetening power than white table sugar, specifically 7 % more. 

The intake of carbohydrates during prolonged exercise helps to combat fatigue and, when ingested post-workout, aids the recovery of muscle and liver glycogen stores.

What are the benefits of consuming fructose?

  • It is a very useful carbohydrate for post-workout consumption, to ensure that the liver glycogen stores that may be depleted during exercise are replenished.
  • It does not raise blood glucose significantly, as fructose has a different absorption mechanism to traditional glucose, and goes directly to the liver. 
  •  It has a low glycaemic index: It is a sweetener with a low glycaemic index, so it produces a lower insulin release than the same amount of glucose. 
  • Energy source before, during and after training. It helps to delay fatigue and when consumed at the end of exercise, it aids the recovery of muscle and liver glycogen stores. 
  • Recovery of liver glycogen is 2 times higher when ingesting fructose-glucose compared to glucose alone.

When to consume fructose?

Before training: to ensure full glycogen stores.

At the end of training: to ensure optimal recovery.

In high-intensity endurance sports: to optimise post-exercise glycogen recovery, 1.0-1.2 g/kg/h of glucose-fructose is recommended in the first few hours (approx. 4 h) after the end of the activity.

How to take fructose?

Add the desired amount of fructose, depending on your nutritional requirements, to your shakes, meals, juices, recipes such as desserts, pancakes, cakes, biscuits, as well as coffees, teas, etc.
