What is vitargo?

Vitargo is a type of complex carbohydrate consisting of 70% amylopectin and 30% amylose. It has a very high molecular weight. It cannot be found naturally, it has been designed specifically for athletes.

It was designed with a molecular structure very similar to that of glycogen.

A carbohydrate, also known as a glucid or carbohydrate, is one of the three macronutrients, whose main function is to provide energy to the body, either immediately or by acting as a reserve (glycogen stores).

Glycogen is the form in which our body stores carbohydrates in the muscles and liver.

There are two types of glycogen:

  • hepatic glycogen: this is the form in which carbohydrates are stored in the liver. Unlike muscle glycogen, its storage capacity is much more limited.
  • Muscle glycogen: The amount of storage is directly related to the amount of lean muscle tissue each individual has.

How was it created?

1993: the then existing carbohydrate-based supplementation had the disadvantage of causing stomach and digestive discomfort.

The products on the market at the time were made with simple sugars, which were not sufficiently effective for endurance sports. Athletes could not ingest the amount they really needed and as a result, they had a lack of energy.

In Sweden, a farmers' cooperative began to consider and research the possibility of developing a specific sports drink that would not cause these discomforts and could be absorbed quickly and efficiently.

It was in 1994 that this new starch, characterised by its high molecular weight, was developed. In the same year, a patent application was filed.

Two years later, a preliminary report was presented comparing and showing the importance of Vitargo. This resulted in the publication of a study in 2000 showing that it replenished muscle glycogen levels 70% faster and in less time than other maltodextrin-based drinks.

In the same year, a similar study was published which showed that it was digested 130% faster than, as in the previous study, maltodextrin-based drinks.

Today, Vitargo remains a popular drink for athletes in a variety of disciplines due to its ease of digestion, delayed fatigue and improved recovery.

Differences from other carbohydrates

The two main differences between Vitargo and other carbohydrates are as follows:

Low osmolarity: resulting in increased intestinal transit. It facilitates energy transport and therefore reduces the risk of cramps.

Its molecular weight: the higher the molecular weight, the less degradation of the molecular structure will occur. This means that its release into the bloodstream is much longer than that of other types of carbohydrate, for example maltodextrin. The aim of this formulation is to achieve a prolonged release over time, but in an effective manner.

Comparison of the molecular weight of vitargo with other carbohydrates

Vitargo: 500,000 to 700,000 grams per mole

Dextrose: 180 grams/mole

Maltodextrin: 1000 to 10,000 grams per mole

Sucrose: 342 grams/mole

Vitargo has been clinically tested at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, and compared to other carbohydrate supplements and sports drinks.

What are the benefits of taking vitargo?

Rapid absorption into the body: because it is produced by a specific fragmentation process, it is able to be absorbed 80% faster than other carbohydrates. This will benefit the replenishment of glycogen levels, filling them up to 70% faster.

This rapid replenishment of glycogen can be very useful and effective after training, once depleted, or during competition loading.

The rapid absorption will also benefit digestion, avoiding possible feelings of heaviness as can occur with those of slow absorption. It spends a very short time in the stomach, an average of 10 minutes after ingestion, 130% faster than other carbohydrates.

It does not absorb any fluids from body stores.

What is vitargo + kre alcalyn?

Vitargo + kre alcalyn is a combination of Vitargo as a carbohydrate source and creatine.

Kre-alkalyn creatine is, as its name suggests, a type of creatine that has the characteristic of having a higher pH compared to other types of this substance, resulting in a slower absorption period and prolonging its effects and benefits. Creatine is a substance generated by our body which is located in every human cell, facilitating physical and mental performance.

Kre Alcalyn creatine is a derivative of creatine monohydrate: an alkaline substance is added to it to raise its pH from 7 to 12.

The main function of this lowering of the pH is to prevent degradation in the stomach, which makes it more bioavailable for use by the muscles.

Kre Alkaline creatine is obtained by adding sodium during its manufacturing process, which has a stabilising effect resulting in it not being discarded by the body as creatinine.

This creatine is especially recommended for those who have suffered from stomach or digestion problems with creatine monohydrate.

The main function of Vitargo + Kre Alcalyn is to enable muscles to perform for a longer period of time with improved strength and explosiveness.

Kre Alcalyn creatine does not retain intramuscular fluids.

Its effects are:

  • improving explosive strength, as well as maximal strength.
  • promotes hypertrophy, muscle mass gain.
  • providing greater muscular congestion and recovery after training by replenishing glycogen stores.

There are similar products consisting of a certain type of carbohydrate, for example dextrose or maltodextrin, together with creatine, to promote the insulin peak and reach the muscle.

Vitargo + KreAlcalyn does not use dextrose or maltodextrin as they are slow absorbing carbohydrates. Being combined with a fast-absorbing carbohydrate promotes the transport of creatine into the bloodstream and the production of creatine will be activated even when creatine is in the stomach.

Is it true that Vitargo with Creatine works very well?

Yes, both are a very good combination due to the fact that creatine is better absorbed in our body if it is consumed with food that has a high glycaemic index.

When to take vitargo?

Before training: it is recommended to take Vitargo between 30 and 60 minutes before training in order to fill the energy reserve quickly and with the advantage of not feeling heavy due to its rapid digestion.

During training: especially recommended in endurance sports to avoid a decrease in performance and to try to delay the onset of fatigue.

After training: it is recommended as a post-workout supplement to replenish spent glycogen stores, combat fatigue, prevent catabolism and, if you are in a bulking phase, maintain your calorie surplus.

What other products or supplements can I mix vitargo with?

Vitargo with protein: it is mixed with another of the three main macronutrients. In this case it is recommended as a post-workout supplement, as it will help recovery and muscle mass growth.

Vitargo with minerals: it is supplemented to replenish mineral salts lost during physical activity. It is recommended during training or as a post-workout supplement.

In what formats can I find vitargo?

  • Vitargo is available in more than one format so that everyone can choose the one that best suits their needs and requirements.
  • Powdered format + 1 dose: the main advantage is that it allows the dose to be adapted to the individual requirements of each person.
  • Single doses: this has the advantage of making it easier to transport during trips, travelling, etc.
  • Sticks: this format is convenient and easy to carry and consume at any time. The main disadvantage is being able to select the total and individualised amount that we want to ingest.

Does Vitargo contain gluten and is it suitable for coeliacs?

Yes, it is suitable for coeliacs. Vitargo contains less than 20 ppm of gluten.

How do I take vitargo?

It is recommended to take a dose of 1 g per kilo of body weight mixed in 250-500 ml of water.

In what types of sports is vitargo recommended?

Strength training: to achieve maximum performance and explosive strength. For example, power lifting, hypertrophy-focused training.

Endurance sports: this fast carbohydrate intake is very effective in endurance sports, for example: triathlons, marathons, etc. It will help prevent fatigue caused by physical exhaustion and maintain performance.

Will Vitargo make me feel bloated?

No, those that cause bloating are usually because they are slow to digest. Stomach emptying is quick compared to other carbohydrates, whether in powder or liquid form.
